“Time, perhaps, is the most excellent teacher. We pass through the present with our eyes blindfolded,” writes Milan Kundera in Laughable Loves. “We are permitted merely to sense and guess at what we are actually experiencing. Only later when the cloth is untied can we glance at the past and find out what we have experienced and what meaning it has.”

It’s hard to feel a sense of perspective when dealing with what life throws at us. But, listening to the words of wisdom from our elders, those who have been there before, will most certainly be worthwhile.

We’ve compiled a list of 15 pieces of life advice from HarborChase residents:

  1. Find a cause that you are passionate about and become invested in it. Social activity and group engagement can work wonders!

  2. Laugh hard and laugh often. Finding the humor in various situations will help keep you positive. You can’t laugh and be angry at the same time.

  3. Sit back and just listen. You will learn a lot more by listening to your peers than you will by telling them what you know. You can learn something from every person you meet.

  4. One good friend is incredibly more valuable than many other relationships. You can start to reflect your five closest relationships, so choose wisely.

  5. Always make time for family. They will be there for you through trials and tribulations, so hold them close. Be sure to call and visit as often as you can!

  6. Communicate with your parents. Listen to their advice. You don’t have to follow it, but don’t throw it out the window.

  7. Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where the fruit is.

  8. Take mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow.

  9. Never stop learning. Education is a compelling tool that will take you wherever you want to go. Knowledge is power.

  10. Create a ritual for each morning. We teach our children to get in the habit of lunchtime and bedtime, but rarely do this for ourselves.

  11. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Laughing about yourself is ok. Be yourself. You will be glad you did.

  12. Stay active. Exercise is the key to a healthy life. Something just as simple as a walk around the block can have a significant impact!

  13. Love your work. If you’re passionate about what you do, you won’t have to work a day in your life. It’s essential that the people you work with bring positivity into your life, not the opposite.

  14. Find a mentor who will guide you and challenge you. Have someone in your life that will challenge you and make you think twice about what you’re doing. Learn from people who know what you don’t.

  15. Stop worrying. Time will fix what worry will not.
