natural immune boostersDid you know a simple walk in the sun can give your immune system a boost? At HarborChase, we strive to help seniors to achieve and stay in optimal health. Fortunately, we have compiled a helpful list of natural ways to keep your immune system healthy. As mentioned, the first way to naturally boost your immune system is to take a sunny stroll.

Sunny Strolls

When you get outside on a sunny day your immune system benefits form the absorption of vitamin D. This can take as little as just 15 minutes in the sun if you are faired skinned. You may want to consult with your doctor about sunlight exposure prior, as some medications react with exposure to sunlight. Another benefit from a sunny stroll is some light exercise. When your body gets light to moderate exercise daily or at least a few times a week, it helps to flush out toxins from your system naturally. Once your blood is pumping, and you start breathing a little heavier, your lungs push out toxins helping them be stronger in the defense to upper respiratory infections, such as the common cold.

Stay Hydrated

We cannot stress how essential staying hydrated is, especially for seniors. If you are in senior living at HarborChase, we are sure you have been told this before but drinking plenty of water benefits your body in so many ways, such as naturally improving your immune system functioning. Water keeps your systems moving and helps flush out harmful toxins, viruses, and bacteria. If you properly consume water based on our body's intake needs than you can help your body in preventing things such as the common cold. Individual intake varies greatly for seniors so consult with your doctor for your ideal hydration target.

Relax and De-stress

When you are sick, your doctor always tells you to get plenty of rest to recover. Getting plenty of sleep can also naturally strengthen your immune system to help your body prevent sicknesses. The best way to get enough sleep is to try and sleep 8 hours a night, but most seniors have trouble staying sleep all night long. Your body repairs itself quickest, when you are sleeping, so if you have difficulty sleeping be sure to schedule a nap during the day to help strengthen your immune system. It is also imperative to de-stress daily. According to the National Institute of Health, psychological stress can be very harmful to your immune system and weaken it significantly. The best way to combat stress is visualization and breathing techniques, listen to music, do arts and crafts, or join a senior yoga class!
