January is National Mental Wellness Month, and as they say, new year, new you! The importance of mental wellbeing is prevalent as we age. Leading a life with mental wellness in check is not only essential to your happiness, but organizations like the National Council on Aging, understand that mental wellness is also a crucial component to healthy living and aging. 

The World Health Organization defines mental health and wellness as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” HarborChase Senior Living understands the importance of senior mental wellness, and we strive to take steps to improve our resident’s mental wellbeing each and every day.

According to Walden University, physical exercise can reduce anxiety, depression, and stress while also improving your confidence and boosting your brainpower. Furthermore, recent studies found that cardiovascular exercise can create new brain cells and improve overall brain function. 

One of the most essential parts of physical exercise is finding a routine that you enjoy. The effects of physical activity are there, but if you don’t enjoy your routine, it is unlikely you will stick with it. Take a brisk walk, jog, swim, dance, or whatever; find the physical activity that is right for you and stick with it!
